What is coaching and how is it different from personal training?
This question is usually the first one asked of me. With personal training, you learn and perform exercises to strengthen your body under the guidance of your trainer. With coaching, you are guided to enlist your brain and your heart to begin to make sustainable changes in your habits in order to strengthen your whole self – body, mind and spirit. Coaches help you identify and address the changes you want to make in any or all of these realms. Coaching is a creative process with the goal of maximizing your unique personal potential, starting from where ever you are right now.
Change is not an easy process. Many things could be holding you back. Are you worried about failing again, because you have tried before? Do you feel like you should be able to do this on your own because you know what you need to do? Have you told yourself you just need to get more motivated? Or are you even starting to feel that it just isn’t worth the effort? These thoughts and feelings happen to most of us who have attempted to make a significant change in some aspect of our lives. You know that quick fixes and popular fads do not provide long term positive changes, but they are very enticing and hard to ignore. There is also an overwhelming amount of information out there, many times false or without sufficient scientific basis, making it really hard to know what to believe or do anymore. No wonder people are confused about what they should eat, which exercises they need to do, or even how to manage their stress.
This is where coaching can make a difference. A certified and well-trained health and wellness coach is uniquely qualified to assist you in navigating this confusing landscape and will provide you with guidance to find strategies that are evidence-based and effective. The great news is that you can make the changes you want, no matter what your past has held. Everyone has the capacity to change. Yes, there will be inevitable obstacles that will pop up along the way, but with your coach by your side, you will figure out how to maneuver around them instead of crashing into them. Your strengths will be uncovered and nurtured to enable you to achieve the lasting lifestyle changes that will have meaning and value in your life.
Coaches encourage self-discovery and help clients clarify what it is they want to achieve. They ask tough questions and provide support to help you navigate your journey from where you are now to where you ultimately want to be. We will focus on your needs, working together to problem solve and develop strategies to reach your goals. I will hold you accountable so that you can be successful. The process will take some time and effort, but the satisfaction, confidence, and fulfillment you will feel makes it truly worthwhile. You can float along at the whim of the prevailing current or you can grab a paddle and actively choose the direction you want to go. The choice is yours – what will you do?
